Tom's House

We're hanging out with Thomas Edison who long ago built his winter home just down the street from us.

On the Edison porch, looking over at the guest house.

I can't imagine why Edison spent so much time in his lab when he had a porch like this with a view of the Caloosahatchee.

It's difficult to see in this photo, but those are actual Edison light bulbs in the chandelier in the living room.

Heading down the road, but we'll be back later.

To Market To Market

We're at the farmers' market, which is a couple blocks from our place. See those beets? I took some home but haven't worked any culinary magic with them - yet. This is more fun than shopping in the supermarket, and you can buy everything from fresh fish to citrus trees. You have to get to know the vendors........one booth had lemons with California stickers on them. In Florida.

Walking home with the goody bags. Gotta get one of those eco-friendly shopping bags. Too much plastic.

The supermarket can't compete with these colors.

Finally got around to making those Christmas cookies. Macadamia with cranberries. Not bad for someone who tries to avoid turning on the oven. Just shows how inspirational a little time in the open air market can be. And a little mother/daughter competition...........sample her cookies at:

Celebration

Good news. We are expecting a visit from the WCG and his parents in April - all the way from NZ to the US.

It's happy hour all day - every day - at this restaurant, and we are happy.

The fish and chips aren't as good here as the ones anywhere in NZ, but the mussels aren't too bad, mate.

And what's a celebration without giant crab claws?

Welcome to South West Florida.

New in Town

There's a new yacht on the river, headed for our marina.

Who could she be? Ah, it's Hooter Patrol IV.

You know how those guys at Hooters love big................boats.

Bloggin' Along

I think that most of us would agree that the laptop is one of the world's greatest inventions. After all, it helps us communicate, keeps us organized (for one thing, no more photos stuffed in drawers, crammed in boxes, mounted in albums), and gives us access to reams of information - useful and otherwise. The computer has even produced the TV-telephone that we've been threatened with for the last fifty years, and my greatest fear about that has been realized; now my friends think I spend all day clad in my pajamas. Who has time for draping and attiring oneself when the Internet beckons? Amazingly, via the world wide web, New Zealand is no farther or no nearer than Ann Arbor.
If you would to eavesdrop on the NZ progeny, click on the following link. I'm going to try the cauliflower soup although I've been avoiding the kitchen ever since my Christmas Culinary Capers. (I know.........I just can't help myself.)

Moon Over Fort Myers

The moon was setting this morning as I was waking.

Then the moon was rising again before the sun had set.

Ah, there it is......the event we look forward to every evening.

The sun is down............the moon is up.

Beach Invasion

Ah, come on, people..............weren't you happy where you were? Shouldn't you be roasting chestnuts by an open fire? Why must you crowd our beaches? We're willing to stay off your ski slopes. If you thought that dolphin was a shark, would you go back home? Please.

Day Two

Still early in the new year, and still upside down in the river. I am not sure how this boat wound up in such a position, but I have discovered that it takes a couple divers in wet suits, several airbags, and a powerful pump to set things to rights again.

After several ups and downs, the lady (are all boats still women now that hurricanes can be either gender?) finally rolls over on her side.

She's still riding low in the water, but the pumps are working hard. Curious byboaters circle the proceedings, probably thankful to have avoided such a predicament. The "better you than me" rationale.

Now she's just listing a bit - still aided by the airbags and tied to the channel marker.

Finally she's off across the river to her home port............not under her own power, of course, but we all need a little help sometimes.

Day One 2009

How humiliating to begin the new year flat on your face, while someone tries to drag you home by the nose, like some disobedient dog. Oh, not so unusual, you say.

Wouldn't you know............a crowd always gathers when you're not at your best.

The first sunset of the new year.................................

and you're left alone in the dark with the tow boat.
Happy New Year.
